The UK Parliament received the statutory instrument on July 17, just one day after ministers approved it. The amendment introduces a narrow exception to existing restrictions on plugs used with generating equipment. A notified body must verify that each plug meets the relevant BS 1363 standards. Product approval applies throughout the UK, while the electricity safety changes cover England, Wales, and Scotland.
The interim specification defines requirements for electrical design, mounting systems, fire safety, labeling, and user instructions. Researchers observed stable operation and found no sustained unsafe energization or thermal hazards. Retailers prepare for certified products
The government’s consultation garnered 466 responses from businesses, experts, regulators, and the public. Over 85% of participants supported the interim specification, with most also backing the plug-related amendments. Stakeholders included manufacturers, installers, network operators, electricians, academics, and consumer groups. Some raised concerns about older household wiring, noncompliant online products, and the need for clear instructions. Others emphasized distinguishing plug-in solar panels from plug-in battery systems.
Retail chains such as B&Q, Currys, Amazon, and Lidl are preparing to offer products under the new category. These systems serve households that cannot install traditional rooftop panels, including renters and residents with balconies or outdoor space. Systems using the new connection method cannot operate legally before August 27. Starting on that date, only approved products within the 800-watt limit may connect through a standard household socket. The capacity total of 22.8 GW at the end of June does not account for systems utilizing the new plug-in framework.
