BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – The European Commission has committed €2.3 million in emergency humanitarian aid to combat cholera outbreaks in West and Central Africa. This support will benefit Nigeria, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and Chad. Officials clarified that the funds will be used for treatment, disease surveillance, improving access to clean water, and sanitation initiatives. The announcement coincides with a surge in cholera cases across several African nations during 2026, with Nigeria experiencing a notable spike mainly in Borno State.

EU sends €2.3 million to strengthen Africa cholera response
EU emergency funding supports cholera response efforts across four African countries.

Nigeria will receive the largest portion of the emergency funds, amounting to €1.5 million. The resources will enable the expansion of intervention teams and the procurement of cholera kits and other vital supplies. Additionally, the funding will aid in treating water sources used by the public and households. Authorities also plan to use part of the aid to enhance disease surveillance in remote regions. The program encompasses case management, risk communication, and community awareness activities to help contain the spread within affected communities.

According to recent World Health Organization data, there have been 90,049 reported cholera cases across 18 countries in the African Region as of June 28, with 1,528 deaths documented. Nigeria accounted for 26,848 cases and 181 deaths during the same period. In June alone, Nigeria reported 19,887 new cases and 97 fatalities. WHO identified Borno State as responsible for more than 95% of Nigeria’s cholera cases in 2026, with Maiduguri, Jere, and Monguno among the most impacted locations.

Funding Aims to Improve Treatment, Water Access, and Disease Monitoring

The Central African Republic will benefit from €500,000 dedicated to case management, vaccination efforts, and water, sanitation, and hygiene programs. This funding will also enhance disease surveillance, case detection, and community engagement activities. It will support the organization of safe and respectful burials when necessary during the outbreak response. WHO reports that the country had 386 cholera cases and 31 deaths through June 28. The European Commission explained that this aid constitutes part of its emergency humanitarian response to the outbreaks impacting these four nations.

Cameroon will receive €100,000 to bolster containment efforts and patient care in affected localities. These funds will cover additional humanitarian staff, vital medicines, cholera treatment units, and oral rehydration stations. WHO data show Cameroon recorded 108 cases and six deaths by June 28. Chad will get €200,000 for water, sanitation, and hygiene interventions. This support will also aid community surveillance and case management. During the same period, Chad reported 109 cases and three deaths.

Nigeria’s Outbreak Spike Drives Regional Increase in Cases

WHO indicated that the African Region saw 27,954 new cholera cases across 12 countries in June, representing a 95% rise from May. The region also experienced 284 cholera-related fatalities that month. Nigeria led in new cases, followed by the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan. WHO attributed the increase in Nigeria to the outbreak in Borno State, where conflict, displacement, poor sanitation, and rainfall have heightened the risk of transmission.

Cholera is an acute diarrheal disease caused by ingesting food or water contaminated with Vibrio cholerae bacteria. Severe cases can lead to dehydration and require immediate medical attention. The EU’s funding aims to support measures that break transmission chains and improve healthcare access in affected zones. The total aid for the four nations amounts to €2.3 million, with a focus on treatment capacity, surveillance, vaccination where applicable, safe water supplies, sanitation, and direct community outreach amid ongoing outbreaks.
