Data shows that a warming global climate greatly speeds up the evaporation of moisture from land and water bodies, creating an environment that is extremely dry and highly unstable. Despite below-average spring rainfall, it was the temperature spikes driven by climate change that turned the situation into a severe drought.

The World Weather Attribution team published research illustrating how rising temperatures deplete natural water reserves. Mariam Zachariah, a researcher at Imperial College London, pointed out that the drought is not primarily caused by low rainfall but by a warmer atmosphere that causes greater moisture deficits on land. This means that drought risk continues to grow even where rainfall patterns remain relatively steady. Scientists explain that each one-degree Celsius increase in temperature enables the atmosphere to hold roughly seven percent more water vapor. This increased capacity significantly accelerates evaporation from soil and vegetation across the landscape.
By analyzing extensive weather data and utilizing advanced computer models, researchers compared today’s hotter conditions to a climate that was 1.4 degrees Celsius cooler. The results reveal that soils in western Europe are now five times more likely to be extremely dry than in a world without human-induced warming. In eastern Europe, these soil moisture deficits have become 11 times more probable. The study also found that the very high evaporative demand observed between April and June in western Europe was about 80 times more likely. As a result, rainfall shortfalls that once would not cause severe drought now lead to much drier soils.

Dominik Schumacher from ETH Zurich highlighted that the trend of soil drying is already intensified during spring before summer begins. He explained that as temperatures increase, the atmosphere’s thirst intensifies, rapidly extracting moisture from rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and soil. The combination of an initially wet start to the year and extreme heat created optimal conditions for large wildfires. The rapid drying of land made it more susceptible to ignition, leading to severe fires across multiple nations. Scientists warn that if global temperatures continue to rise, drought conditions could become even more frequent. Should global temperatures reach 2.8 degrees Celsius as projected, the likelihood of such evaporative events could double.
