Australian sea lion succumbs to bird flu on Kangaroo Island amid heightened surveillance

ADELAIDE / RankWire.AI / – South Australian authorities have confirmed the first fatality of an endangered Australian sea lion caused by H5N1 avian influenza. A park ranger found the carcass at Seal Bay on Kangaroo Island, which hosts the third-largest single colony of this species, representing about five percent of its global population. As the virus threatens this species for the first time, officials are ramping up monitoring efforts across key pinniped breeding sites.

According to reports from the South Australia Department for Environment and Water, laboratory analyses showed a strong positive for H5 avian influenza. Environment Minister Emily Bourke explained that although the sea lion had been recovering from a shark wound sustained three months earlier, post-mortem tests confirmed that the viral infection was the main cause of death. She added that the animal’s weakened immune system during recovery likely made it more susceptible to the virus.

This event raises serious conservation concerns for the species, which is endemic to Australia and estimated to have a total population of between 10,000 and 12,000. Approximately 80 percent of the remaining population lives in South Australia, where coastal colonies had already been experiencing an annual decline of about two percent before the virus was detected.

Following this confirmed case, wildlife officials in the state launched containment measures at Seal Bay. Teams administered hookworm treatments to over 400 sea lion pups to enhance their immune defenses, while also trapping hundreds of feral cats to reduce the risk of virus transmission within the colony area. As the situation develops, authorities work alongside the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry to investigate participation in international trials for experimental mammalian vaccines, in response to the threat posed by the virus.

This case indicates an expansion of the H5N1 strain among Australian marine mammals, following the detection of a long-nosed fur seal infected at Beachport on the Limestone Coast. Researchers from Charles Darwin University had previously warned of possible mortality events among local seal populations, drawing comparisons to mass die-offs observed in pinniped colonies in South America and sub-Antarctic regions.

Wildlife officials enforce biosecurity protocols across coastal reserves

More than 290 cases of H5 avian influenza have been confirmed in wild bird and mammal populations across South Australia, accounting for over half of the total cases nationwide. While no additional sea lion deaths have been reported at Seal Bay, rangers continue to monitor the situation closely.

Both state and federal agencies maintain daily surveillance at island sanctuaries and mainland haul-out sites. Updates on biosecurity measures, mortality data, and disease control efforts are regularly posted on official government environmental websites as teams work diligently to safeguard vulnerable marine species.
